It was just to be a gag and a take-off on the Beatles when three beauties were outfitted in wigs and outlandish costumes and told to sing for an episode of Petticoat Junction which was seen on CBS-TV last spring. What surprised Paul Henning, creator of the series, was that the girls came up with a distinctive rock 'n' roll style, which necessitated script changes for the fall season now under way. They're doing a lot of singing now.
The three, Blonde Jeannine Riley, Brunette Pat Woodell, and Redhaired Linda Kaye visited the Tribune's color studio recently where the cover photo on this issue of TV Week was taken, and were talking about the show.
"I have done some professional singing," Pat said, "but the other girls and I had never sung together."
"I was astonished at the reception we got from the crew on the sound stage," added Linda, who has had some singing lessons. "They yelled as if we were bringing down the house, and wanted encores."
Jeannine never had done any singing.
"But we all just seemed to click," Jeannine remarked. "Maybe it's a new career for us."
